The Longhorns have done a variety of work in their community to promote FIRST and FTC, assist other teams, and promoting participation.
Mentoring Initiative
We are hoping to set up, and mentor a number of teams in the coming year, we are currently making contact with the schools, here is some more information on our program:
In May of 2009, we attended the 2009 IEEE Western Canadian Robot Games to promote FIRST and FTC as well as showcase our robot. We set up the FTC field and answered questions from passersby, and also did a short presentation featuring our FTC competitions in British Columbia as well as Atlanta.
For the first half of the 2009 season, we practiced at Bishop Grandin High School, a local school which also had a FRC/FTC team. We both assisted and received assistance from their team, as well as made use of the metalworking shop at their school. Bishop Grandin was a welcoming environment in which we would often chat with members of the student body and faculty about our competition and challenges, and received helpful and relevant information in return.
Gil Tucker Global News Segment
In Febuary 2009, we did a TV interview with Gil Tucker of Global News Calgary. This interview essentially outlined what FTC was about, as well as some details on this year's competition and the challenges of being a young rookie team.
Presentation of FTC to FLL Participants
At the 2009 Alberta FLL Regionals (which our FLL team, NRG Robotics, was a part of), a member of our team and our coach did an introduction and presentation on FTC to some of the participants there. We brought our robot and part of the field, and demonstrated what the challenge was about, as well as the abilities of the Tetrix platform. This was mainly to introduce FLL teams to this higher-level competition, and to spark their interest in participation.
